Résumé

Gratitude has two faces. One face of gratitude is interpersonal: we are grateful to someone for something they did. The other face of gratitude is decidedly not interpersonal. In such cases, we are grateful for something, but not to anyone (e.g., we are grateful for an important opportunity or for our own existence). Call these two faces of gratitude personal and impersonal, respectively. How are these two emotions related? The current orthodoxy is that they are distinct emotions (or that impersonal gratitude is misplaced personal gratitude). I provide a novel account of what unifies these two forms of gratitude and distinguishes them from related attitudes and emotions (e.g., gladness, relief, and appreciation). On the account I develop, your being grateful to someone or for something consists in your valuing someone/something because you see them as bearing an important relationship to something you see as being good-relative-to-you and such that you are not primarily creditworthy for producing or maintaining it.
