CALL FOR PAPERS

Instead of creating mere objects of visual seduction, architecture relates, mediates, and projects meanings. The ultimate meaning of any building is beyond architecture; it directs our consciousness back to the world and toward our own sense of self and being.

The History and Theory of Architecture Program at the McGill University School of Architecture invites you to participate in an interdisciplinary conference to be held 14-15 September 2007 in Montreal, Canada. Our keynote speaker will be Juhani Pallasmaa, the Helsinki-based architect, educator and writer. Broadly stated, the aim of the conference is to explore points of contact between the poetics and ethics in architecture. How can architects reconcile their wish to design a beautiful world and the imperative to create a better place for society? Is there a responsible place for the architect’s personal imagination in a world of opposing views, cultures and political agendas? For whom should architects design?

A wide range of topics is possible, including but not limited to the following:

• Imagination and participation
• Desire, excess and the architectural act
• Beauty and the business of architecture
• The culture of sustainable design
• Identity, boundaries and estrangement
• The morality of happiness
• Dwelling in virtual space
• Uses of history in design and/or pedagogy
• Design as method

Please email a 100-150 word abstract and short curriculum vitae by October 1, 2006 to: ht.architecture@mcgill.ca

Submissions from established and junior scholars, graduate students, and practitioners of architecture and related disciplines are welcome. Authors of submitted abstracts will be notified by the reviewing committee by October 7, 2006. The deadline for final conference papers (15-20 minutes) will be May 30, 2007.

Sessions will be held at the Canadian Centre for Architecture on Friday, September 14th and the McGill University School of Architecture on Saturday, September 15th.

Au lieu de créer seulement des objets séduisants au regard, l’architecture relate, réconcilie et projete diverses significations. Le sens ultime de quelconque bâtiment transcende l’architecture; il redirige notre conscience sur le monde et la dirige vers notre propre appréciation de soi et d’être.

Le programme d’Histoire et théorie de l’architecture, de l’École
d’architecture de l’Université McGill, vous invite à participer à une conférence interdisciplinaire qui se tiendra les 14 et 15 septembre 2007, à Montréal, au Canada. Notre conférencier principal sera Juhani Pallasmaa, architecte, enseignant et auteur établi à Helsinki. Ouvertement énoncé, l’objectif de cette conférence consiste à explorer les points de rencontre entre la poétique et l’éthique en architecture. Comment les architectes peuvent-ils réconcilier leur désir de créer un mode empli de beauté et leur devoir de concevoir un endroit meilleur pour la société? L’imagination personnelle de l’architecte occupe-t-elle un endroit responsable au sein d’un monde aux visions, cultures et visées politiques opposées? Pour qui l’architecte devrait-il concevoir?

Une vaste gamme de sujets est admissible, voici une liste non exhaustive de sujets possibles:

• L’imagination et la participation
• Le désir, l’excès et l’acte architectural
• La beauté et la commercialisation de l’architecture
• La culture du développement durable
• Identités, frontières et l’aliénation
• La moralité du bonheur
• Habiter l’espace virtuel
• Usages de l’histoire en design et/ou en pédagogie
• Le design comme méthode

Veuillez soumettre un résumé bref de votre communication, soit de 100 à 150 mots, ainsi qu’un court curriculum vitae, avant le 1er octobre 2006, à l’adresse suivante: ht.architecture@mcgill.ca.

Les soumissions en provenance de chercheurs établis et juniors, étudiants en maîtrise, ainsi que celles de praticiens en architecture ou autres disciplines connexes sont bienvenues. L’acceptation de la communication sera transmise par le comité de sélection aux auteurs le 7 octobre 2006. La date limite pour la remise du texte de la communication finale (de 15 à 20 minutes) est le 30 mai 2007.

Les sessions de travail se tiendront au Centre Canadien d’Architecture le vendredi, 14 Septembre, et à l’Ecole d’Architecture de l’Université McGill le samedi, 15 Septembre 2007.
