Biography

Amah ADETOU, Master’s student in Ethics and Science, Technology, Society at the University of Strasbourg.

I completed an internship at CRÉ from January to May 2022 as part of my Master’s degree in Ethics. I am working on artificial moral agents (AMAs) under the supervision of Martin Gibert.

I participated in the 3rd study day on AI ethics organized by Obvia and CRÉ on the theme of Ethics and Simulation: from AI to virtual reality. My presentation titled “Can a Moral Agent Be Virtual?” is available online.

About me:

After a Bachelor’s degree in Human and Social Sciences, with a major in Philosophy in 2017 in Lomé, Togo, where I grew up, I continued my studies at the University of Strasbourg in France.

In 2020, I obtained a Master’s in Research in Philosophy. I worked on the social and political impacts of digital technology based on Jürgen Habermas and his concepts of Public Space, Communication, and Democracy.

Since then, my research has turned towards the ethics of machines and artificial moral agents. I am completing a Master’s thesis on this subject under the direction of Martin Gibert and François Jaquet. Can artificial moral agents exist? Should we rejoice or lament their existence? What advice should philosophers give to engineers who would want to build such entities?

More broadly, I am interested in the interactions between technology and society.
