Biographie
Olusegun Steven Samuel is a Research Fellow at the Center for Interdisciplinary and Intercultural Studies, University of Tuebingen, Germany. Prior to this position, Olusegun earned his BA in Philosophy at the Lagos State University (LASU), MA in Philosophy (Distinction) at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, and Ph.D. in Humanities and Languages (Philosophy) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. His areas of interest include environmental and intercultural philosophy, moral theory, epistemology, and comparative philosophy. Olusegun’s research focuses on the broad theme of moral status and belonging, hierarchy, participation, justice, sustainability, race, wellbeing, and decoloniality. He has received numerous scholarships, fellowships, and a grant, including the Lagos State University Scholar Award (2005-2010, Nigeria), International Postgraduate University Award (fully supported Ph.D. Scholarship awarded by the University of New South Wales (UNSW), 2017-2021), the Faculty of Arts and Social Science Top-Up Scholarship (2017-2021, UNSW), and Higher Degree Research Career Development Grant (2020). Besides these awards, Olusegun recently received LASU Philosophy Excellence Award (awarded by the Department of Philosophy, Lagos State University (June 2022) and a Visiting Fellowship Position, awarded by the Centre de recherche en éthique (CRÉ) and the Groupe de recherche en éthique environnementale et animale (GRÉEA), University of Montreal, Canada (Oct 2022-Jan 2023). Olusegun’s works have been published in international journals, including his co-authored articles with Ademola Kazeem Fayemi, “A Critique of Thaddeus Metz’s Modal Relational Account of Moral Status” (2020, Theoria), and “Africa versus West on Reparation,” (2014, Peace Review). Olusegun is a member of the Canadian Society for Study of Practical Ethics (Canada), Australasian Association of Philosophy (Australia), Centre for Interdisciplinary and Intercultural Studies (COF, Tuebingen), and the African Environmental Ethics Association (AEEA, Global). He co-founded and host the African Environmental Ethics Association’s monthly talk (with Dr. Rotimi Omosulu of the University of West Indies, Jamaica). Olusegun is also a current community member of the Environment Advisory Committee of the Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Local Government, NSW, Australia, on environmental sustainability.
