The special issue “L’idée de nature dans le viseur” offers a critical examination of the concept of nature and the role it plays in justifying human domination over other animals. It explores how appeals to “nature” are often used to present a social construct—the hierarchy between species—as if it were a biological, natural, and immutable fact (“humans are superior by nature”).
Among other things, this issue shows that:
- from a scientific perspective, the concept of species is far less clear-cut than is commonly assumed;
- “human” and “animal” function not only as biological categories, but also as social categories produced and sustained through relations of domination;
- animal rights and environmental movements share important common ground, yet also diverge in significant ways;
- from an antispeciesist perspective, animals are not merely members of species contributing to biodiversity, but sentient individuals with lives of their own.
This issue also features:
- a provocative philosophical argument for viewing animals not only as moral patients, but also as moral agents;
- psychological research on animalization, a process used to demean and marginalize both humans and nonhuman animals;
- interspecies recipes to share with animals, contributed by Canadian scholar Sue Donaldson, co-author of Zoopolis;
- a response to Michel Onfray and Francis Wolff, two philosophers who criticize veganism and antispeciesism on deeply flawed grounds.
