Roundtable discussion: “La place d’une approche féministe dans la recherche en éthique, philosophie politique et philosophie des émotions”
As part of the course Introduction to Political Philosophy Research (GPL-1070), you are cordially invited to a roundtable discussion open to the public, which will be held on Monday, March 16, 2026, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., in room FAS 140Z of the Félix-Antoine Savard Pavilion at Laval University.
This event, hosted by Romane Marcotte, a doctoral student in political philosophy, will feature two members and co-researchers of the CRÉ: Professor Anne-Marie Gagné-Julien (Laval University), who teaches in the Department of Philosophy, and Professor Laura Silva (Laval University), who teaches in the Department of Political Science.
Summary of the roundtable discussion: Feminist approaches aim to highlight examples of harmful exclusion that go beyond the boundaries of familiar minority categories. For example, feminist bioethics aims to “look beyond sex and gender-based marginalization to examine other forms of exclusion, and to seek to identify how power relations, interacting with minority statuses, can perpetuate moral harms in research, clinical care, and public health” (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2023). A feminist analytical approach is therefore essential for understanding and analyzing, with varying degrees of scope, different phenomena in research.
Biographies
Guest speakers: Laura Silva and Anne-Marie Gagné-Julien
Laura Silva
An assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at Laval University, Laura Silva’s research lies at the intersection of feminist theory, moral psychology, and social and political philosophy. Her main work focuses on the moral and political roles of emotions and seeks to understand the importance of emotions in the fight against social injustice. Her research is guided by two methodological considerations: not straying from the real-world conditions in which emotions occur, and being informed by the most relevant work in neuroscience and psychology.
Anne-Marie Gagné-Julien
Assistant professor in the Faculty of Philosophy and specialist in applied ethics, Anne-Marie’s main areas of interest focus on the ethics and epistemology of mental health and participatory science. She is particularly interested in the processes of medicalization and psychiatrization, the concept of ableism, and epistemic and emotional injustices in the field of mental health.
Host: Romane Marcotte
Romane Marcotte is a philosophy teacher at Cégep Garneau and a doctoral candidate in philosophy at Laval University. She is working under the supervision of Catherine Rioux on moral responsibility and the legitimacy of reactive attitudes in contexts of oppression from the perspective of feminist philosophy.
