Study Day: Inégalités post mortem – La justice et les corps morts

Camille Collin, postdoctoral researcher at the Centre de Recherche Interdisciplinaire sur la Diversité et la Démocratie (CRIDAQ-UQTR) and a student member of the CRÉ, is organizing an upcoming study day dedicated to postmortem inequalities, aimed at exploring the material, political, and ethical dimensions of the treatment of deceased bodies.

The event aims to shed light on the power dynamics and inequalities inherent in the treatment of the deceased, which are often overlooked or relegated to the margins of society, the legal system, and symbolic discourse.

On the agenda:

  • (Dis)Respect for Funeral Rights: What justice is there for unclaimed, abandoned, or bodies identified many years after death?
  • Death and Grief in the Context of Migration: How can we support the grieving process in the context of migration?
  • Care and Return of Bodies: What care and rights are corpses entitled to?
  • Death and resistance: Can memory and funeral practices become forms of identity-based resistance?

The study day will take place on Monday, May 25, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in room PK-1140 at the Université du Québec à Montréal, located at 201 Avenue du Président-Kennedy in Montreal.
