Review of the book “Hobbe’s Philosophy of Religion” (Oxford U. Press, 2023) by Arash Abizadeh

Arash Abizadeh (McGill University) publishes a new review of Thomas Holden’s book Hobbe’s Philosophy of Religion, published by Oxford University Press (2023).

In this review, Abizadeh describes how Holden rejects the common assumption that the key interpretive question concerning Hobbes’ theology is whether he was a theist or an atheist. While many commentators see Hobbes’ theology as containing propositions about the nature of God, Abizadeh reports that Holden instead sees it as an attempt to honour a being whose nature is inconceivable.
