Biography
Maryna Nekrasova is a PhD student and Richard H. Tomlinson Doctoral Fellow in Philosophy at McGill University, supervised by Dr. Jocelyn Maclure and Dr. Ian Gold. Her research lies at the intersection of social epistemology, the philosophy of artificial intelligence, and the ethics of technology.
Maryna’s current work focuses on the philosophy of expertise—specifically, what constitutes expertise and how experts shape the production and dissemination of knowledge in both public and private contexts. Her dissertation explores the epistemic roles played by AI experts and investigates the epistemic vices to which they are most susceptible, particularly within industry, academic institutions, and popular scholarship.
In addition to her work on expertise, Maryna’s other research focuses on the operationalization of health justice for machine learning tools in the field of mental health. She was an embedded philosopher in a national project led by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, which is developing a mental health platform for youth seeking care across Canada.
Before joining McGill, Maryna completed a B.Hum. degree in Philosophy and Humanities at Carleton University, where she graduated with the Chancellor’s Medal.
