Biography

Jean-Jacques Cadet holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Paris VIII and is a faculty member at the State University of Haiti and Quisqueya University. He is currently a visiting professor at McGill University. He previously held a postdoctoral position in the Department of Sociology at Université Paris Cité (2025–2026) and was a visiting researcher at Université Laval. He has also conducted research stays at international institutions such as the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD Montpellier, France), Ibn Zohr University in Agadir (Morocco), and the University of Chicago (USA). In 2022, he was elected program director at the Collège international de philosophie (CIPH) in Paris, where he leads the seminar “Epistemology, Marxism, and Ecology in the Francophone Caribbean.” Additionally, he serves on the editorial board of the journal *Rue Descartes*, co-directing the “Épistémè” section. He is currently coordinating a research project titled “Hegel, Marx, and Dussel” in collaboration with Olivier Clain (Université Laval). He is also an associate researcher at the AIHP-GEODE laboratory (Industrial Archaeology, History, and Heritage / Geography, Development, and Environment of the Caribbean) at the University of the Antilles in Martinique.

His research examines the conceptual frameworks of postcolonial and decolonial movements in order to rethink the question of emancipation. He draws upon the reception of Marx within radical Black intellectual circles, focusing on key figures such as W. E. B. Du Bois, Jacques Roumain, C. L. R. James, Frantz Fanon, Aimé Césaire, Léopold Sédar Senghor, and Cedric Robinson. He pays particular attention to Caribbean thinkers who succeed in establishing genuine dialogues with Western intellectuals within a framework of epistemic decolonization. Finally, through the lens of ecology and science, his work explores, more broadly, the intellectual and political movements shaping the Caribbean region.
