Biography
With a bachelor’s degree in psychology (UdeM) and a master’s degree in ethics (UQÀR), Alex is pursuing a PhD in practical philosophy (UdS), under the supervision of Allison Marchildon (Philosophy, Sherbrooke University) and co-supervision of Jessica Roda (Anthropology, Georgetown University).
Recipient of a FRQSC doctoral scholarship (2023-2025), Alex’s doctoral work focuses on the concept of intermarginality and, more specifically, that related to public figures who identify as queer with a Hasidic background. Using a field philosophy approach, Alex suggests that the claims these individuals make in the public sphere are changing normative dynamics, thereby complicating the discussion on religion, orthodoxy, and the permeability of their boundaries. In addition, since 2022, Alex has been working as a research assistant on the project Quelle gouvernance pour le commerce équitable? Entre régulation et participation, funded by the SSHRC (2018-2025). This project focuses on the power dynamics and governance practices that promote the empowerment of small fair trade producers.
In addition to supporting the principal investigators (Allison Marchildon (Philosophy, UdS) and Marie-Claude Desjardins (Law, UdS)) in the field, Alex actively participates in conceptual reflections on agency and empowerment that guide the project and has the opportunity to work on critical issues, as well as decolonial alternatives emerging from the actors encountered. Finally, other commitments punctuate Alex’s career, including participation as a member of several research groups such as SoDRUS, the RéQEF’s Religions, Feminisms and Genders Working Group, the Collectif Judéité(s), the Sociétés, Religions, Laïcité (focus on contemporary Judaism, religion, culture, migration: a comparative approach), and the Association d’Études Juives Canadiennes.
