Call for participants: study on the future of xenotransplantation in Canada
A team of researchers from Université de Montréal, McGill University and the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites you to take part in a study entitled “Avenir de la xénotransplantation au Canada : perspectives des parties prenantes en transplantation rénale” (The Future of Xenotransplantation in Canada: Perspectives of Kidney Transplant Stakeholders). CRÉ’s former co-researcher Marie-Chantal Fortin (Université de Montréal, CHUM) is part of the team.
In recent years, the field has seen major advances, including the creation of genetically modified pigs and experimental transplants of pig kidneys into humans. In the future, these kidneys could reduce or even eliminate the shortage of organs for transplantation. Xenotransplantation, however, raises ethical issues.
The study aims to gather perspectives on the future of xenotransplantation in Canada from kidney transplant stakeholders: patients, donors, family members and professionals. The team also wishes to hear from people involved in animal ethics.
Participation involves a virtual interview of about 40 to 60 minutes.
