Biography

Sophie Albuquerque is a PhD candidate in philosophy (applied ethics) at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR), under the supervision of Marie-Josée Drolet (UQTR) and Helene Polatajko from the University of Toronto. Trained as an occupational therapist, she is a lecturer in occupational therapy at Aix-Marseille University (AMU) in France. Her doctoral research develops a philosophy of occupation that challenges work-centered conceptions of living well, arguing that living well is not primarily about being productive, but about being well occupied. She examines the normative, ethical, and political implications of the organization, valuation, and distribution of human occupations in Western societies.

Her research interests include the critique of economic rationality, health promotion through occupation, and transdisciplinary approaches to human activity. She is an expert in primary care and health equity for Occupational Therapy Europe and a co-founder of Acceleration & Adaptation, a research and consulting firm focused on technological and occupational transitions. Since 2023, she has served on the board of directors of the Société francophone de recherche sur les occupations (SFRO).
