Biography
Holder of a Habilitation à diriger des recherches (HDR) from the University of Lille, Anatole Fogou is a full professor and researcher affiliated with the Laboratory of Ethics and Public Policy (EthicsLab) at the Catholic University of Central Africa (UCAC). He currently serves as Head of the Department of Philosophy at the Higher Teacher Training College (École normale supérieure) of the University of Buea (Cameroon). He also teaches modern philosophy as well as moral and political philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at the Higher Teacher Training College of Maroua.
His research focuses primarily on issues of governance in Africa, in relation to the legacies of colonization and the dynamics of decolonization, as well as on questions of global justice and ethnocultural justice, identity, ethics, and bioethics. His approach is characterized by sustained attention to contemporary philosophical debates and to their capacity to illuminate concrete situations, both in Africa and beyond.
A former recipient of the Fernand Braudel / International Fellowship for Experienced Researchers at the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH, 2013), he was a visiting researcher at the Institut Eric Weil in Lille (2013–2014). He also received a fellowship from the Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI) on American Politics and Political Thought (2019). In addition, he participated in an interuniversity cooperation project on the “contribution of local knowledge to contemporary ethical, legal, and political thought,” jointly conducted by the Université du Québec à Rimouski and UCAC, with support from the AUF.
Anatole Fogou is the author of several books, including Thinking Effectivity: Studies in Hegelian Political Philosophy (Paris: L’Harmattan, 2021); with F. Wassouni, The Africa of Cheikh Anta Diop, Frantz Fanon, and Jean-Marc Ela (Paris: L’Harmattan, 2023); edited with Yogno Tabeko, Humanity in the Face of (Bio)Technological Innovations (Paris: L’Harmattan, 2021); and, with the same author, From the Human to the Transhuman? Reflections on Transhumanism (Paris: L’Harmattan, 2020). He has also published numerous articles in scholarly journals and edited volumes at both national and international levels.
Anatole Fogou is undertaking a research stay as an invited researcher from April 15 to May 15, 2026, as part of the partnership between the Centre de recherche en éthique (CRÉ) and the Laboratory for Ethics and Public Policy (EthicsLab) at the Catholic University of Central Africa (UCAC), founded and directed by Thierry Ngosso.
