Biography

Christiane Bailey holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the Université de Montréal, where she completed a thesis entitled “À la mesure du Dasein. La genèse des existentiaux dans la vie animale chez le jeune Heidegger (1919–1926).”

She is currently the Coordinator of Concordia University’s Social Justice Centre and is also an associate member of the Groupe de recherche en éthique environnementale et animale (GRÉEA) and of the Environmental and Animal Ethics Axis of the Centre de recherche en éthique (CRÉ), where she held a graduate fellowship in 2014–2015. She is additionally a member of the APPLE research group (Animals in Philosophy, Politics, Law, and Ethics) and of the Observatoire québécois en droit animalier (OQDA).

Christiane’s work focuses on critical and ecofeminist approaches in contemporary animal ethics, as well as on illegal direct action and civil disobedience on behalf of animals. She is involved in several grassroots animal-advocacy groups, including BESA and the Communauté Droit Animalier Québec (DAQ). She is a regular media commentator, gives talks on issues related to animals, and organises the Estivales de la question animale au Québec, an annual gathering bringing together activists and academics.

Christiane recently edited a special issue of the journal Possibles (2024) on antispeciesism, which includes her own article, “From Human Supremacy to Animal Rights.” Her other publications include “Des animaux et des femmes : La thèse des oppressions liées selon les écoféministes antispécistes,” published in a special issue of Les ateliers de l’éthique / The Ethics Forum (2024), as well as the book La philosophie à l’abattoir. Réflexions sur le bacon, l’empathie et l’éthique animale, co-authored with Jean-François Labonté and published by Atelier 10 in 2018.
