Biography

Fernanda Pérez-Gay Juarez obtained an MD degree in Mexico city in 2013, after which she moved to Montreal to pursue her PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience at McGill University. She is affiliated as a postdoctoral researcher in the Neurophilosophy Lab at McGill University and at CRÉ. She works under the cosupervision of Ian Gold (McGill) and Christine Tappolet (UdeM).

Her research in cognitive neuroscience uses methods such as EEG and TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) to study the neural correlates of categorization, perception, language and theory of mind. She has a keen interest in transdisciplinary dialogues and broadcasting neuroscience to diverse audiences. To date, she has given conferences to the general public in various settings, published more than 30 science journalism articles in canadian and mexican media and she wrote, directed and hosted SINAPSIS, Conexiones entre el Arte y tu Cerebro, a series of videos and essays -funded by the Mexican Arts and Technologies Council-  that explore the links between art and the brain.

She is currently affiliated to the CRÉ to develop the project “Art and well-being from a neuroscientific perspective: The transformative potential of artistic practices”. Expanding and translating her broadcasting initiative SINAPSIS, this project plans to engage discoveries in the cognitive neurosciences of art with an ethical perspective through a series of lectures and articles for the general public. Through the diffusion of studies in neuroscience demonstrating the ability of the arts to generate emotional and cognitive states that play a central role in our lives, her project aims to spark reflection about how artistic practices (creation and appreciation) can help us in the quest for well-being, while emphasizing an interdisciplinary perspective, open to exchanges between ethicists, neuroscientists and artists.
