résumé

Critics of Dewey have often been bothered by his apparent hostility toward children’s imaginative pursuits. In this paper, I trace the roots of this antagonism. As I will demonstrate, in some of his earliest work, Dewey adopted a set of anti-Romantic criticisms and used these concerns to attack what one might call « runaway » imaginative and emotional tendencies. Although Dewey’s views on imaginative pursuits cannot be vindicated completely, I will show that these views are neither small-minded nor arbitrary.
