Biographie

Visual and Media Anthropology à la Freie Universität Berlin. J’y suis chargée de cours depuis 2008.

Biography

Postdoctoral fellow at the CRE for the year 2017-2018, I am doing research on the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and visual media. My project is an exploration of photography, film and video addressing residential schools as featured by the TRC and beyond since the implementation of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (2007-2015). It aims to increase our understanding of the dynamic linkages between visual media and processes of national memory making in restorative justice contexts. In so doing, I explore the application of the concept of representation (of the past) within the TRC institutional framework and beyond, and ask how visual media participate in the shaping and the unsettling of a collective memory of residential schools.

Before joining the CRE I completed my PhD in Anthropology at the Freie Universität Berlin, where I was part of the interdisciplinary research center Languages of Emotion. Drawing from anthropological fieldwork among Algonquins in Quebec, my thesis examined the local impacts of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement measures. Exploring the reconciliatory aspiration of the settlement, it weaved survivor experiences of the financial compensations and the TRC together with current theorizing on emotions, memory, trauma and transitional justice.

I also studied Visual Anthropology (M.A. 2006) at Goldsmiths College (University of London) and worked as a Research Associate and Program Coordinator for the M.A. Visual and Media Anthropology from 2008-2010 at the Freie Universität Berlin. I have been a lecturer in the MA program since 2008.
