Résumé

‘Outlaw’ emotions (Jagger, 1989), experiencing anger at a sexist slight that conflicts with a judgement that this treatment is unproblematic, for example, are incredibly important to resisting oppression. Outlaw emotions must be able to act as reasons for belief and action less we risk denying agency of those in their possession. Situations of outlaw emotions are often seen as cases of inverse akrasia, where we act for reasons despite acting against our overall judgment of what we ought to do. Many perceptual theories defend inverse akrasia based on emotion by taking emotions to justify evaluative beliefs much the same way perceptual states justify perceptual beliefs; immediately and non-inferentially, as long as there is no reason to distrust one’s emotional experience (Tappolet, 2016; Jones, 2003). The problem explored in this talk is whether such dominant views of how emotions play justificatory roles can really account for cases of outlaw emotions.
